This year, we are thrilled to capture the heart and soul of our traditional Walk for Hope event by pivoting to a DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope! Although COVID-19 has changed all of our plans, we are excited to still have a way to honor our flagship charity event that has helped raise millions of dollars towards better understanding and treatments of illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, postpartum depression, schizophrenia, and anorexia.

So while we can’t walk together in person, you can still make an impact by participating in the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope at the Angus Barn.

Held on the same day – Sunday, October 11 – this fun, family-friendly drive-thru offers participants the opportunity to get their t-shirt, armband, delicious lunch to go, win prizes,  hear local music, and more, all while staying safely in your car! Can’t make it for the DRIVE-THRU this year? Join us VIRTUALLY instead or make a DONATION! It’s more important than ever to support mental illness research right here in our own community.

100% of the money raised by participants directly funds local mental illness research at the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Psychiatry. And, as critically, it helps call attention to the stigma and significance of these often invisible illnesses, which now due to the pandemic affect as many as 1 in 3 American adults.

Our mission doesn’t stop… our goal remains the same!

The Walk for Hope is more than just a community event—it’s a huge fundraiser that directly funds the research and treatment of mental illness. Most of our participants raise the money they need to participate; in fact, the average participant raises at least $150. Whether you join us for the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope or the VIRTUAL Walk/Run, pricing is the same.

DRIVE-THRU WALK FOR HOPE

The Walk for Hope will look a little different this year, but we are determined to move forward to raise awareness and desperately needed funds for mental illness research. The DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope will loop through the beautiful Angus Barn property and will be a fun, safe activity for the whole family! Participants in the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope will stay in their vehicles the entire time and will be served by staff and limited volunteers along the route. There will be music, entertainment, a delicious boxed lunch to go, and more!

Only registered participants with an armband will receive a boxed lunch. Please note that picnicking on the Angus Barn property will not be permitted – lunches must be taken offsite to enjoy!

Designated Arrival Times

To minimize traffic issues on event day, we are staggering car arrival times. Participants must come during their assigned time window, designated by last name (see chart below).

  1. If you are in the same vehicle as friends or family with different last names, please come at the time designated for the driver’s last name.
  2. If your team is planning to picnic together offsite after the DRIVE-THRU event, please have your team captain give us a call and we will be happy to assign a team time slot that accommodates your group!

Race for Steak

Unfortunately, we are not offering an in-person/timed Race for Steak this year. We encourage runners to join us for the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope, or to sign up for the VIRTUAL Walk/Run.

VIRTUAL WALK/RUN

If you cannot attend the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope, or would prefer to support us from afar, we’d love to have you join us VIRTUALLY on October 11! You get to pick the details of your virtual experience: what time, where, and how far you go.

Registration for the VIRTUAL Walk/Run includes a t-shirt and armband, and your registration fee can be fundraised! Participants are welcome to pick up their t-shirts and armbands at the Early Check-In Days or we will be happy to mail them to you after the DRIVE-THRU event.

Early Check-In Days

Beat the crowd and save time! Prior to Event Day, participants can register, turn in collection envelopes, and pick up T-shirts and event armbands at the Angus Barn.We STRONGLY encourage Early Check-In.

Due to public health and social distancing guidelines, same-day registrations will be extremely limited at the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope. We STRONGLY encourage all participants – DRIVE-THRU and VIRTUAL – to pre-register and attend Early Check-In days.

  • Thursday, October 8: 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • ​Friday, October 9: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 10: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

TEAMS

Our teams are so incredibly important to the success of the Walk for Hope each year! Did you know that teams raise 70% of our walker income each year? Teams must consist of a minimum of 5 people, so gather 4 or more friends or family members to join you on a team, and get brainstorming!

Team captains for teams that raise $500 or more over the minimum registration fee total for each team member receive an invitation to our annual Team Captain Kickoff lunch in August at the Angus Barn. It’s delicious incentive to raise more – and as always, 100% of the funds raised by participants and teams goes directly to fund mental illness research.

And if you really want to go for the gold, teams who raise $5,000 or more earn a custom flag printed with their team name for next year’s event. Once you have a flag, for each subsequent year your team raises $5,000 or more, we will attach a patch with that year on it! The week of the Walk, the flags wave from the Angus Barn wall along Route 70. Flags can also be carried on the Walk proudly!

RAFFLE PRIZES

Not only is our raffle a fun and easy way to raise money for the Foundation of Hope—a small ticket can win big! Here are the great prizes our participants can win in 2020:

Raffle tickets are readily available for you to sell at no cost to you. The tickets you sell can be put towards your overall fundraising goal, but not towards your registration fee. Call the Foundation of Hope office at 919-781-9255 for more information on where to get raffle tickets.

HEALTH & SAFETY

The health, safety, and well-being of our staff, volunteers, and participants is of the utmost importance to us. We will be strictly following all CDC, state, and local government guidelines and safety protocols at the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope.

COVID-19 Precautions

What we are doing to protect you

  • All staff, volunteers, and vendors will pass a health check and wellness screening prior to beginning their shift at the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope.
  • Masks and gloves will be worn by all staff, volunteers, and vendors.
  • All stations will comply with the appropriate social distancing guidelines.
  • Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the property.
  • We will clean and sanitize any common areas regularly.

What you can do to protect us

  • Remain in your vehicle at all times. If you must exit your vehicle, please notify a staff member or volunteer before doing so. Due to the Governor’s mandate, masks are required to be worn if you are outside of your vehicle.
  • We strongly suggest that all participants wear a mask unless they have a health condition which prohibits them from having to wear one.
  • If you have been exposed to COVID-19 recently or have symptoms of COVID-19 (including fever, cough, or shortness of breath), please stay home and seek help from a healthcare professional.

July 2020: Due to the City of Raleigh announcement on July 7, the Walk for Hope transitioned to a DRIVE-THRU event format in addition to offering a VIRTUAL option. All registration fees are final and 100% will be included in your total fundraising contribution to our critical mission of funding mental illness research. What if I am already registered for the Walk for Hope?
All existing registration payments for the Walk for Hope will be transferred to the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope and will contribute towards our critical mission of funding mental illness research! If you would prefer the VIRTUAL Walk/Run option, please call us at 919-781-WALK or email walkforhope@walkforhope.com.

Where will the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope take place?

What do I do when I arrive?
We’ll have staff onsite to help point your car in the right direction and answer any questions you have!

  • Participants who are PRE-REGISTERED (including those already checked-in) arriving with T-shirt and event armband will be directed up the driveway to the entrance checkpoint
  • Participants who need to register, need to turn in money or those with questions will be directed to the onsite registration area

Please note only registered participants will receive T-shirts and boxed lunches.

How do I turn in my fundraising money?
At the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope, there will be an area to turn in your fundraising dollars and collection envelopes. However, due to public health requirements and social distancing guidelines, staff will be extremely limited. We strongly encourage all participants to come by one of our Early Check-In days to save time on Event day!

What is there to eat?
To-go boxed lunches will be given to all registered participants of the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope! Delicious and freshly prepared Angus Barn burgers will be chargrilled in the Angus Barn’s kitchen and packed to go with all sides, condiments, and utensils. Please remain in your vehicle – servers will come to you. Picnicking on the Angus Barn property is not permitted – to go boxed lunches must be consumed offsite.

Can I park to eat or take photos with my family/team onsite?
For the safety of our staff, volunteers, and participants, there will be NO PARKING available at the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope. Participants must remain in their vehicles at all times as they loop through the Angus Barn property. Picnicking on the Angus Barn property is not permitted – to go boxed lunches must be consumed offsite. We LOVE photos though – we’ll have photographers on Event day, and we encourage all our DRIVE-THRU “Walkers” to send us their photos or use #WalkforHope and post on social media!

What happens if there is bad weather?
The DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope will take place rain or shine. In the event of severe weather, we will post updates on our website and social media accounts. There will be no refunds of the registration fee.

Will you have bathroom facilities?
Port-a-potties will be available onsite along the DRIVE-THRU route. Please notify a volunteer if you need to use them so they can direct you appropriately. Masks will be required should you need to leave your vehicle.

How do I win prizes?
All registered participants receive a T-shirt. Those attending the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope will be entered into our on-site raffle for dozens of great prizes! VIRTUAL Walk/Run participants will be entered into a separate drawing for three $100 Angus Barn gift cards. And whether you are walking in NYC, running in LA, or driving in Raleigh, the top 10 overall fundraisers and the top 3 overall teams receive special prizes and recognition. Drawings for raffle prizes will be held on Monday, October 12.

Can I come to the DRIVE-THRU and still walk/run?
YES! You can come to the DRIVE-THRU event AND walk/run virtually with us. You can walk or run in your neighborhood, at Umstead Park, Durant Park, wherever you want – just be sure to take pictures and tag us on social media using #Walkforhope so we can like and share!

I need to change my registration type – what do I do?
No problem – if you signed up for VIRTUAL Walk/Run but can now come to the DRIVE-THRU Walk for Hope, we can’t wait to see you! Just give us a call at 919-781-WALK or email walkforhope@walkforhope.com. Same goes for switching DRIVE-THRU to VIRTUAL – we can help you make that change.
